A Comprehensive Guide to Small Ship Cruises

The cabins sometimes also come with spa discounts, unlimited spa lounge access and other spa-related perks. On a typical cruise ship, cabins are spread out all over the place — high and low, and to the front, middle and back. Brilliance of the Seas makes it impossible to feel bored during a vacation! These top things to do onboard this beloved cruise ship make it a fan favorite for many. All our ships have staterooms designed to accommodate guests with mobility disabilities and other disabilities that require the features of an accessible stateroom. Accessible staterooms range from 159 square feet to 298 square feet, and offer a five-foot turning radius in sleeping areas, plus bathrooms and sitting areas for easy maneuverability.

The 5 most desirable cabin locations on any cruise ship

This will free up other valuable drawers, shelves, and counter space throughout your cabin. You can use them to store just about anything – clothes, shoes, swim gear, small toys, books, souvenirs acquired en route, etc. Weather balloons are released on every cruise to capture info on temperature, humidity and wind speed.

When you arrive in your cabin, you will often find a few things on your counters or desk. If you won’t need the ice bucket, wine glasses or other items, ask your cabin steward to remove them. Packing cubes really help to keep everything organized and can be a space and time saver.

Hotel Reward Programs

If you are ordering room service they can bring ice and glasses for you. And, the best part, they can be whisked away or left outside your door once you are done. No need for a permanent station that uses up valuable counter space. Also, if you have small children, such items are an unnecessary attractive nuisance.

How to Choose the Best Olive Oil

Often you can simply extend your elbows out to your sides and be touching opposite walls of the space. Even so, having this extra space in addition to the enclosed cabin is a nice perk that can make your cabin feel much larger. While there’s a lot you can learn above about whether or not to book an interior cabin, sometimes it’s more helpful just to hear what it’s really like from someone that’s been there.

This cruise cabin hack has the most relevance to newer cruise ships. Look for “hidden” storage spaces behind mirrors or wood paneling. Sometimes you may be pleasantly surprised to find additional shelves or cubbies. If you do not find any, you should ask your stateroom attendant whether you have overlooked anything. This is because they sometimes incorporate the oddly angled interior spaces that exist at the front of ships, which often have slanted fronts. As mentioned above, forward-facing cabins often will not have balconies, as the wind over the bow of a ship that's underway is such that a balcony isn't practical.

Grand Suite

In general, cruise cabins are cool, so you don’t have to worry about getting too hot. In our view, we’ve had issues with the room being too cold for our taste and not being able to warm things up a bit. Note that just because a cabin can sleep four people doesn’t mean it will do so comfortably. In our opinion most traditional cabins have enough space for two adults and one/two kids.

Like hotels, there are multiple options available depending on your party size – solo rooms, double occupancy, or larger, more luxurious suites called RockStar Quarters. You can also choose between insider, ocean view, and balcony rooms. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in five categories; small-ship ocean cruise lines have ships that can carry 249 or fewer passengers. It can be easy to get caught up in the destination when you’re booking a vacation, and almost forget to consider what your accommodations will look like.

Strategically located on the upper northwest shore of Chesapeake Bay, Maryland's largest city has one of the premier ports of the Mid-Atlantic region. The Abbe Museum is the only museum in Maine dedicated solely to the Native American heritage of the state. For locally made crafts and goods, head to the shops and galleries clustered around the waterfront. Frequent arts and crafts markets are held at the Village Green, a small grassy park in the middle of town, and the Bar Harbor Farmers Market runs from 9 a.m. In general, waiting until the last minute is not the best idea, unless you live in Seattle or Vancouver and don't need to book flights. Gulf of Alaska sailings — especially those in late August and September — can encounter rough seas in the gulf portion of the voyage.

Baltimore

While you can book a flight to Ketchikan through a 90-minute flight from Seattle, the easiest way to get to Ketchikan is through an ocean cruise from either Anchorage, Seattle, or Vancouver. If San Diego is the starting and endpoint of your cruise and you need to park your car, your best option is airport parking; the airport parking lots are a short cab ride away from the San Diego cruise terminal. If you arrive by Amtrak at Santa Fe station, you can even walk to the cruise terminal. From here, cruisers can explore the top attractions of San Diego on foot, including the San Diego Gaslamp Quarter, the USS Midway and Maritime Museum, Balboa Park, and much more. Other nearby attractions include the Gaslamp Quarter and Balboa Park, home to the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Museum of Art.

Longer sailings from the West Coast

There are bicycle rickshaws along the piers so it’s easy to travel between the piers and attractions. Seattle has grown to be the largest cruise ship port on the West Coast of the USA. Most of the traffic is heading to an inside passage cruise to Alaska from Seattle, with over 200 departures in a typical year. Elsewhere, Busch Gardens amusement park is one of Tampa Bay's biggest draws, while the nearby cities of Clearwater and St. Petersburg have awesome beaches. Located on the shores of the Mississippi River, the New Orleans cruise port is right near the heart of the city.

It's easier than fumbling with multiple train, bus, ferry and hotel reservations to cobble together the same trip on your own. One of the key reasons to cruise Alaska versus taking a land tour is to visit destinations along the Inside Passage that you cannot reach by road. Plus, many of the state's famous glaciers are best viewed from the sea. Cruises from Miami sail to the Caribbean, the Bahamas, the Panama Canal as well as transatlantic cruises and longer, more exotic cruises. Norwegian’s Cruise Ship in Hawaii used to do 7-day sailings around the island but has now included French Polynesia in some of their itineraries.

In April 2023, MSC Meraviglia will homeport in Brooklyn, offering voyages of six to 11 nights to the Bahamas, Caribbean, Bermuda, and Canada and New England. This will mark the first time MSC has based one of its ships out of the New York area. The terminal is located on the southside of Boston Harbor and its nearby attractions include the New England Aquarium, the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum and the Boston Fish Pier, to name a few. Fort McHenry, where the national anthem was composed by Francis Scott Key, sits next to the port. Other popular attractions are located in nearby Inner Harbor, such as the National Aquarium, the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture, and the National Historic Seaport.

The number of cruise ports has expanded considerably over the years and now include ports such as New York, Boston, Baltimore, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, New Orleans, Galveston, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Seattle. While it's technically possible to cruise all the way to Europe from ports on the east coast of the United States, many shorter European cruises actually depart from European ports. Usually, I like to set sail for my destination (typically somewhere in Mexico or Central America, but sometimes farther east) and then return to the Big Easy as my reward for a trip well-taken.

To this day, Bar Harbor is still a popular playground for celebrities, like Martha Stewart and Susan Sarandon who are also counted among the island’s part-time residents. Icy Strait Point is notable among Alaska cruise ports because the area and its attractions are all Native Alaskan-owned. Most port and tour staff hail from Hoonah, Alaska's largest Tlingit village. The port is set on Chichagof Island, which is known for its large bear population.

Cold temperatures, icy waters and a long snowy season are not conducive to early spring and late fall cruises. Alaska might be one of the most beautiful places in the world, but it's rugged and can be tricky to get around. Explore the Last Frontier by cruise ship, and you can travel to gold rush towns, glaciers, Alaska Native heritage sites and natural areas brimming with wildlife in comfort, even luxury. Cruises from New York sail to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda and transatlantic cruises. Bayonne is convenient to many residents of the northeast including New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Cruises from Bayonne sail to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda and transatlantic cruises.

Vancouver is also home to some notable larger ships too, including Royal Caribbean's Jewel and Radiance of the Seas; Holland America's Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam and Volendam; and Disney Wonder to name a few. The classic capital of the Alaska cruise, the Canadian city of Vancouver has plenty to offer cruisers. Perfectly poised at the northwest edge of the United States, Seattle provides an ideal launching site for Alaska adventures.

Fort Lauderdale has eight cruise terminals and accommodates close to four million cruise passengers a year. From there, I head north along the 101 to Malibu or Santa Barbara, or dig into unique neighborhoods — Thai town and its spicy food are a personal favorite place to stop. Indeed, rather than asking, "Where is the closest cruise port to me?" you might instead ask where the coolest one is. Depending on how much time you've allocated for your cruise and the preferences of the people in your party, you can think of the place where you set sail from as a trip-within-a-trip. Before your ship leaves or after it returns to port, make the most of your travels by diving into the city where you'll embark on your journey. Sitka quickly became a favorite cruise port and city when we arrived there one summer to explore Alaska.

As a born-and-bred Midwesterner, I know all too well what an ordeal getting to the coast can be! Whether you fly west to Los Angeles and Seattle, or southward to Houston, New Orleans or Miami, the idea of having to take a flight before you take your cruise can be daunting. This site focuses on small-format cruises and ship-within-a-ship concepts on large cruise ships, including special cruise experiences you can enjoy during your next vacation. Balance is key when making the most out of your time on a cruise. If I'm taking a cruise to the Caribbean for a week, I might focus on the pristine nature of the Dominican Republic's beaches and choose to sightsee among more cultural spots, such as the colorful houses of CuraƧao. You can count on those lines to offer entire seasons of short sailings. A few other lines, such as Holland America or Princess Cruises, will offer the occasional repositioning sailing along the Pacific Coast between San Francisco or Seattle and Vancouver. Sometimes those short cruises will fall over a weekend, allowing you that quick getaway without missing work. The other key thing to understand is a weekend cruise will typically require some time off work or missed school. That's because most cruise ships board in the afternoon and depart in the early evening then return to port in the morning. On the Pacific Coast, weekend cruises from Los Angeles, San Diego or Long Beach in California (near Los Angeles) head to Ensenada, Mexico for a quick getaway.

Thanks to the complicated Passenger Vessel Services Act, foreign-flagged cruise ships cannot leave port, sail in circles with their casinos, shops and spas open, then return back to port two nights later. Ships need to call in another country before heading back – which limits where you can sail on a weekend cruise. The post-travel blues are real, though they become more acute the more often you travel. I've felt especially sad disembarking cruise ships, precisely because the line between vacation life and real life blurs. But the easiest way to get over one trip ending is to plan another one. Do You Need a Passport for Caribbean Cruises?

do you need passport for bahamas cruise royal caribbean

There are plenty of reasons to take a cruise, including great food, plentiful activities and lots of sunshine. If you’re looking for a Bahamas cruise, you’ll want to be aware of the documentation requirements for your trip. Additionally, visas or travel permits will soon be required to enter the U.K. Additionally, visas or travel permits will soon be required to enter European Union countries. However, while many cruise lines may not require passengers to bring their passports, plenty recommend it, as does the U.S. It can come in handy if you need an emergency medical evacuation or the ship has to schedule an emergency docking at a different port that's not on your itinerary.

How Much Does It Cost To Take A Bahamas Cruise?

However, it is important to check the visa requirements and any additional entry requirements for the countries you will be visiting during the cruise. Not having a passport means you will need to travel to a U.S. embassy or consulate in a foreign country to apply for a temporary visa to re-enter the country. Not all embassies/consulates are located near the cruise ports and moreover, the time it takes for the entire process to occur is not quick. If you’re bringing a birth certificate for proof of citizenship, it must be issued by the Vital Records Department of the state in which you were born.

What Are the Passport Requirements for The Bahamas?

You’re about to embark on an exciting journey, but first, let’s talk about the necessary travel documents you’ll need. The health visa is required no more than 5 days before arrival. You may want to start looking around for which testing options near you are available, and how long it will roughly take to get the test to be processed. In just the first week the new Adventure of the Seas cruises from The Bahamas have been on sale, they have sold extremely well.

Who Doesn’t Require a Passport to Enter The Bahamas?

Your options range from Barbados to Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Aruba and more. While the answer is no in many cases, it's a good idea to bring it along, just in case. We believe everyone should be able to make financial decisions with confidence. A flight back home is the fastest, cheapest, and most easily accessible option in such a circumstance. However, no matter how grave the incident demanding your attention is, you won’t be allowed to fly back into the United States without your passport on you. You’ll just have to wait for the next cruise going your route—until then, you’re stuck abroad.

For travelers from certain countries, proof of onward travel may also be required by immigration authorities of The Bahamas. As a rule of thumb, it’s always a good idea to keep your passport with you when you cross your country’s borders and go into foreign territory, even if it isn’t mandatory for modes of travel other than flying. Even if you do manage to get a boat back as soon as possible, it’s possible (you wouldn’t believe how often!) that you may miss it and need to fly to the next stop to board the liner. Again, the lack of a passport will mean that you can’t board any island hoppers to catch up with your cruise. Imagine that you’re on this beautiful vacation in The Bahamas.

Harbour Island is part of the Out Islands, a destination in the Bahamas located off its northeastern coast. The capital and largest town of the island is George Town/Georgetown, with a population of about 1500. The Bimini Islands are located approximately 140 miles west of Nassau and about 53 miles east of Miami. MSC Cruises is my all-time favorite, but Royal Caribbean, Norweigan Cruise Line, and Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line are a ton of fun, too. Yes, officials do not typically ask about a traveler’s criminal record of those entering the Bahamas.

In fact, many airlines don’t allow American citizens without valid passports to fly to The Bahamas as a way to keep them from being stuck there and not being able to board a flight back home. Bahamas cruises are a great way to explore the beautiful islands of The Bahamas. All you need is a passport and some documentation that proves your citizenship or residency in The Bahamas.

Many cruisers have reported savings of $100 or more per person on flights booked through Royal Caribbean. Before you do anything else, find your passport and check the expiration date. I hope this post has been helpful to you as you think about or plan your next trip. The Bahamas are a great place to visit almost any time of year. You’ll be in warm, sunny climes all year round if that’s what you want. You’ll be wearing shorts and tank tops come December or January when it starts getting cold back home, too.

For non-U.S. citizens

Always be sure to double-check before departure to ensure you have everything you need. Even better, you might not have to pay for coverage out-of-pocket. Book your trip with a credit card that includes travel insurance coverage as a perk and you'll have some peace of mind, even without additional coverage. There are occasions when you’ll need to bring your passport for a cruise. If you’re cruising outside of the U.S. — such as a jaunt through the Mediterranean — you’ll need to have your passport with you.

You should check the passport requirements for any port you are visiting, as sometimes there can be a port that requires a passport to visit even if you do not need a passport to return to the United States. Royal Caribbean emphasizes that Baptismal papers and hospital certificates of birth are not acceptable. Voter registration cards or Social Security cards are not considered proof of citizenship. Let’s take a look at whether you need a passport for a Bahamas cruise, what other types of documentation you can use and how it differs when you’re flying versus cruising. That said, some may require a passport if you want to disembark at ports in any Caribbean destination. And if you're starting and ending your cruise at different ports within the U.S. — or flying in to or out of a Caribbean country — you will need a passport.

This is because you will be entering foreign countries during your cruise, and a passport is the standard form of identification and proof of citizenship accepted by most countries. It's important to check each country's entry requirements on your cruise itinerary, as some countries may have additional visas or entry requirements. Yes, a passport is required for Royal Caribbean cruises departing from foreign ports. If you’re a citizen of the United States, you’ll also need a valid driver’s license or other government-issued photo identification to board the ship. If you booked a closed-loop cruise to The Bahamas, you can get away with using a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license.

In addition, you can add your trip details and other family members. Doing all of this now means when it is time for your test results, you will be ready to drop the results in and submit them. Nassau (and New Providence Island in general) has many hotels and resorts you can stay at. Another easy task to get out of the way now is to book a hotel room in Nassau before (and maybe after) your sailing. You can book flights through traditional methods, but you should also look at booking your airfare through Royal Caribbean before booking anything.

A 3-night cruise in an inside cabin will be much cheaper than a 7-night cruise in a balcony. Thankfully, there are numerous closed-loop cruises to The Bahamas to choose from if you don't have a passport, ranging from short weekend trips out of South Florida to 10-night journeys from New York. The Bahamas is one of the most popular year-round vacation destinations. From gorgeous turquoise beaches to delicious authentic cuisine, there's so much to experience, even if you're on a short 3-night cruise from Florida.

It comes after the rainy and hurricane seasons and is typically really cold in the U.S. making a perfect time to visit. No, Royal Caribbean does not keep your passport during the cruise. Passports are typically retained by the passengers themselves for identification purposes during port visits and immigration procedures.

For travelers from the United States traveling to The Bahamas for tourism, travel within the country is exempt from visa requirements for eight weeks. It bears repeating that these exceptions are only for sea travel; passports are compulsory for all travelers if they’re flying into the United States. For a closed-loop Bahamas cruise (one that departs from the country and arrives in the country via the same port), there are identification options other than passports, so a passport isn’t mandatory.

Here’s a summary of what official identification a U.S. citizen needs to fly to or cruise to/from the Bahamas. Because even though you are taking a cruise in the Bahamas, you are flying from the U.S. to go to the Bahamas to embark your ship. This is called a closed-loop cruise and requirements are more lenient. No refunds will be given to individuals who fail to bring proper documentation.

The castle of the Dukes of Brittany, giant mechanical elephants — yes really — and taking coffee in La Cigale,  the wonderful 19th century Belle Epoch Brasserie, are essential sites to tick off. Perched on the banks of the SaĆ“ne, MĆ¢con has a cafĆ©-lined promenade, while an overnight stay in Lyon lets you enjoy the city’s best restaurants and watering holes. At Avignon, you can explore the Palais des Papes as well as the huge indoor market to pick up ProvenƧal snacks.

Active & Discovery on the Rhine (Southbound) 2024

With calls in Amsterdam, Cologne and Basel, this journey reveals a rich landscape of beauty and culture. I had read that if you have bad weather, you will be going opposite the weather, so you may only have 1 day of bad weather. If you are going AtoB, you could have bad weather for several days. We had 1 1/2 days to explore Zurich before boarding the ship. The last day of the cruise is actually spent in AMS so we had an entire day of touring / exploring. Going BtoA - you have a full day in Rudesheim, going AtoB, you only have 1/2 day.

The RhƓne and Rhine

In Beaune, taste local camembert along with some of the world’s finest Chardonnay wines, and in Giverny, take a stroll through Monet’s beautiful garden at the house where the painter lived for over 40 years. Similarly, part of the central square in Libourne is surrounded by the traditional arcades and is especially lively on market days. At Blaye, Vauban’s 17th century citadel is a military masterpiece complete with village and ramparts to explore. In Strasbourg, we took the bus tour (had to in order to get to the center) and then walked around on our own. We had a delightful and eclectic lunch at a place in the center famous for carpaccio. Nothing fancy and the only bad wine we had in France, ever, but food was good.

The Hermitage museum (of St. Petersburg Russia) has a branch in Amsterdam with changing exhibits from the museum's holdings [we didn't get to that, but it's at the top of my list for the next visit]. Check which tours will be included in your cruise, and make sure you do a Canal Boat cruise. My advice would be to really read very carefully the itinerary of the cruise in each direction. The "highlight" of the Rhine River cruise is sailing through the area with the castles so either direction is calculated to afford passengers the best daytime viewing. We sailed this area in the morning, I think AtoB might be after lunch. Because of this each direction has a slightly altered itinerary.

Price includes return rail travel from London, free wifi and drinks package. Calling at Paris, Melun, Barbizon, Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne and Sens. Departs th September. You’ll also lock eyes on the towering 2,000-year-old Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct and view the private rooms at Versailles as Marie Antoinette saw them.

As others have mentioned, look at port times in each city for each direction. Following a leisurely morning of chocolate tasting and discovery, we set off for a couple of days in the radiant city of Lucerne. Enjoy an orientation tour of Lucerne, where we’ll marvel at its beauty, including the iconic wooden bridges spanning the river.

In Rudeshiem we went for a coffee instead of the museum and then walked around for a couple of hours. Don't forgot to pre book tickets for Ann Frank house if you are going. The boat docked in Amsterdam at noon and moored overnight and then we disembarked the boat the next morning - thus the 3rd night. (1) Keukenhof garden will be open from March 21th to May 12th, 2024. The opening dates are subject to change by Keukenhof Flower Park.

Rhine Castles & Moselle Vineyards (Start Basel, End Amsterdam)

The most renowned of these is the Chapel Bridge, dating back to the 14th century and adorned with historic paintings depicting Lucerne’s rich history. After our tour, unwind with a delightful dinner and a tranquil evening. Discover the enchanting landscapes and rich cultures of the Middle Rhine, a UNESCO Site boasting turreted fortresses, grand cathedrals, medieval towns and stunning scenery. Admire terraced vineyards dating back to the Romans and taste the region’s renowned red and white wines. Savor the culinary traditions of Alsace and explore Amsterdam, Basel and Cologne.

Today we wave “auf wiedersehen” to our new Swiss friends and make our way to the airport for our flight home. In the afternoon, our exploration of the Oberland continues with a scenic lunch amidst the majestic Alps in Interlaken. Following, we’ll visit the renowned ‘village of waterfalls,’ Lauterbrunnen, nestled within the awe-inspiring trough valleys of the Alps, surrounded by towering rock faces and mountain peaks. Marvel at the spectacular 300-meter-high Staubbach Falls before we return to Lucerne for a splendid farewell dinner with our group, reflecting on the unforgettable experiences shared during our Journey. Stay current with special offers, news and destination-focused content.

Because of the timing - cruise left Dec 7th - we weren't going to spend extended time pre/post in Europe but did want a day to over-come travel-lag. We'd been to Amsterdam 3x and love it but decided we wanted to see Basel CMS so we spent 2 nights there pre-trip and then flew home the day the cruise ended. In the end, I was very happy we decided on BtoA. While we loved the Basel CMS, once on the River, I felt the markets got better as we went north - Cologne (Koln) was just fabulous! I think it would have been a let-down if we had been there first.

My husband enjoyed the walking tour and potato pancake beer stop at the conclusion of the tour in Cologne. Mt Rigi for us was wonderful - we booked at the train station - boat, then cog wheel train, then gondola. They are very informative at the train station - look for information office, right next to the Burger King. And of course my beloved chocolate heaven - Laderach stores. Did you do any of the optional or extra cost excursions? We're still waiting or our passport renewals so we haven't been able to complete our registration and see what's available.

How to Find Your Future Cruise Credit Number and Plan Your Dream Vacation

A future cruise credit number is a unique identifier linked to a specific amount of money that you can apply towards a future cruise booking. It's typically issued by cruise lines when you cancel or change an existing reservation, or when you receive a refund or compensation for a cruise that you were unable to take.

Future cruise credits are a valuable way to save money on your next cruise vacation. They can also be used to upgrade your cabin, book additional excursions, or purchase onboard amenities. In the past, future cruise credits were often issued as paper vouchers, but most cruise lines now use electronic systems that allow you to view and manage your credits online.
